Qualcomm reveals a reference headset featuring its Snapdragon XR2 platform!

As we know, last year, Qualcomm revealed the Snapdragon XR2 platform. It is Qualcomm’s first 5G chipset for the mixed reality that produces a huge increase in the CPU and GPU performance, seven concurrent cameras, and more. Also, it is the world’s first 5G-enabled XR reference design that packs superior performance, interactivity, and immersion.

Yesterday, the company revealed the reference design headset based on the XR2 platform. The reference design basically demonstrates how the XR2 will work in an extended reality (XR) headset. The latest XR platform also features an 8K 360-degree video playback and a computer vision processor.

Goertek, which is a Chinese acoustic components company, has developed the reference design device of the headset in order to help manufacturers scale and build AR, VR, and MR devices for commercial use. Qualcomm claims that the reference design of the headset blusters twice the CPU and GPU performance, six times higher resolution, four times the video bandwidth, and eleven times the AI improvements.

The reference design features up to seven cameras. It features two internal cameras, one for each eye in order to support eye-tracking. It also includes four external cameras, two RGB cameras for MR experience, and two for head-tracking, which can also be used to precipitate accurate depth maps. The design also includes an IR emitter for hand tracking and head tracking with simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) to synchronize.

Apart from that, the reference design also has ingrained technology partners like the Atraxa electromagnetic tracking technology from Northern Digital Inc. (NDI) that enables accurate, low latency 6DoF controller and peripheral device tracking without line-of-sight restrictions.

Also, this is the first time on an XR headset, and the Snapdragon XR2 reference design delivers an all-inclusive, end-to-end boundless XR over 5G solution with Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System to allow OEMs to develop 5G XR devices for global networks rapidly. As its a prototype, there is currently no information about when we will able to buy this headset, but according to the company, the reference design will be available for selective partners in upcoming months.
