On day 1 of Snapdragon Tech Summit, Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon 865 SoCs for flagship phones, but the company didn’t provide detailed information on the chipset. Now, on day 2 of Summit, the company confirmed everything about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset. The devices based on it will be available in the first quarter of 2020.
CPU and GPU
The 7mm Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset has a Prime core of clock speed up to 2.84GHz and 3 Performance cores of clock speed up to 2.4GHz, which derived from the ARM Cortex-A77 design. The company calls this new cores Kryo 585, but it’s unclear about the customization over ARM Cortex-A77 design. The remaining 4 efficiency cores are ARM Cortex-A55, which has a maximum clock speed of 1.8GHz.
The company claims that the CPU offers 25% faster performance and better power efficiency than the Snapdragon 855. Moreover, Qualcomm Quick Charge AI technology checks battery health and safety to help extend battery life cycles up to 200 days.
The chipset has Adreno 650 GPU, which has 20% faster graphics rendering and better-sustained performance compared to Adreno 640.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 supports LPDDR5 memory at up to 2750MHz, but OEMs could use LPDDR4. Samsung has already started mass production of LPDDR5 RAM for mobile devices. It features dual differential clock for increasing frequency, deep sleep mode for power consumption, and link ECC to recover data. It also has faster app switching capability.
As mobile gaming is growing in popularity and becoming more performance-intensive, Qualcomm is offering a series of features under its Snapdragon Gaming Elite, which was first introduced with SD 855. Now, five new features are added to it, which include Desktop Foward Rendering, Game Color Plus, updatable GPU drivers, Snapdragon Game Performance Engine, and Adreno HDR Fast Blend. Hence, offering a desktop-level gaming performance.
The chipset features the company’s new Spectra 480 ISP, which captures professional-quality photos and videos at a processing speed of 2 Gigapixel per second. This Gigapixel process speed offers new camera capabilities including Dolby Vision video capture, 8K video recording, capture 200-megapixel photos, and simultaneously capture 4K HDR video and 64 MP photos.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 comes with the company’s 5th Generation AI Engine powered by a new Hexagon Tensor Accelerator in the Hexagon 698 DSP offering 4x TOPs (15 Trillion Operations Per Second) with 35 percent more power-efficient than its predecessors. This fuels intuitive mobile experiences in photography, gaming, and voice interactions such as real-time AI translation.
The company designed a new component named Sensing Hub, which ensures accurate voice detection and always-on contextual awareness for smarter virtual assistants—all while using extremely low power.
The chipset supports Snapdragon X55 5G modem, which has higher download and upload speeds, more bandwidths at sub-6GHz frequencies, support mmWave, and is more power-efficient. The chipset also features FastConnect 6800 mobile connectivity subsystem, which includes support for Wi-Fi 6 with speed of up to 1.744 Gbps, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, and dual-frequency GPS. It’s also equipped with Super Wide Band voice over Bluetooth and TrueWireless Stereo Plus technologies for stable connection of truly wireless earbuds.
The audio of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 includes Hexagon Voice Assistant Accelerator, Aqstic audio codec up to WCD9385, Aqstic smart speaker amplifier up to WSA8815, and Aqstic audio technology.
With the Quick Charge 4+ technology in Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, it will offer a 27W of fast wired charging. With the new 865 processor, the charging speed didn’t get increased, but with the Quick Charge AI, it will offer you a longer battery life cycle.
