A few days ago, OnePlus uploaded a teaser video on Twitter that gave us a Sneak-Peek at the upcoming OnePlus Concept One smartphone. There were quite a few discussions regarding this new offering by OnePlus, including the more curvier display and maybe a new color also. But one thing which blew everyone’s mind was the Color Shifting glass technology of the phone!
Yes, you heard it right. The first concept phone by OnePlus has an invisible tri-camera setup. Well, the cameras are not exactly invisible. It is just an illusion created only with the help of the new Color shifting glass technology opted by the company in the OnePlus Concept One phone’s rear side.
Color Shifting glass Technology Explained
According to Wired, there is a special sheet of glass present on the cameras of the OnePlus Concept One. The company got hold of this special glass with the help of Mclaren. The trick behind this illusion is that when the cameras are off, the glass is opaque, and it hides the cameras, but when you fire up the cameras, it sends an electromagnetic current to the glass that converts it from Opaque to transparent.
As it becomes transparent, the tri-camera setup of the concept phone becomes visible, and it looks like the cameras appeared out of nowhere. The glass present on the device is an electromagnetic one that makes the illusion possible. Just talking about this seems too easy, isn’t it?
But after knowing how much work does it took OnePlus to get it working, It will not seem easy at all.
OnePlus Concept One Blueprints
Looking further in the Wired story about the Electromagnetic glass, they have also given the blueprint or raw drawing of what the OnePlus Concept One with the color shifting glass technology will look like. Looking closely at the provided patterns, we can say that the phone can sport a leather exterior like the OnePlus Mclaren edition.
There is not much to be said about the display of the phone as it does not look like the one we have seen in the teaser video by OnePlus a few days earlier. According to various reports, the Concept One is rumored to be having the camera configurations of OnePlus 7T Pro which means it will have a 48 Megapixel SONY Primary sensor, a 16 Megapixel for Ultra-Wide Angle Shots and an 8 Megapixel telephoto lens.
One of the first provocations that OnePlus had to face was the power consumption of the Electromagnetic lens. As you read above, the lens needs some power for the illusion to work. Assuming you open your camera frequently in your daily usage, this trick would have cost you a certain amount of power from the battery resulting in reduced battery time.
OnePlus has claimed that they have worked on this issue and have reduced the battery usage by a significant margin. So that it does not limit on how many times you open the camera on your OnePlus Concept One smartphone.
Another challenge that the company had to face because of the Electromagnetic glass was the thickness and the Camera-latency. According to the CEO of OnePlus Mr. Pete Lau, it was a challenge, but we have managed to use the electromagnetic glass with only 0.1 millimeters of additional thickness to the rear side of the phone.
There is still time for the OnePlus Concept One launch, but it will be interesting to see if people will like the implementation of the Electromagnetic glass and Color Shifting Glass Technology or not!
