Recently, Redmi’s General Manager Lu Weibing officially announced that the LCD in-display fingerprint readers are now clear for mass-production! This is a huge milestone for Xiaomi as in today’s smartphone world, in-display biometric sensors are a huge thing as they have come a long way inaccuracy, and they contribute to the minimalism of smartphones and also make it look more futuristic.
Lu Weibang recently shared a very short video of the LCD In-display Fingerprint Readers in action on a prototype smartphone. The main issue that was hindering the mass production of these in-display fingerprint scanners was the infrared light was not passing through the display above the sensor. The R&D department fixed this issue by implementing a high-transmittance film that ensures infrared light passage through the display above the sensor.
Previously, in-display fingerprint scanners were only available for devices with AMOLED displays and not the LCD because of the backlight module which was one of the major reasons that this tech is not yet spotted on budget devices but now with this achievement by the company’s R&D department we can hope to see budget devices from Redmi with an in-display fingerprint sensor.
The company has not yet revealed the cost incurred and speed of this sensor, but as it is a first-gen tech, we can not expect lightning-fast speed as of now. Although, we can expect to see a fast fingerprint scanner even with the LCD display as Lu Weibieng said in his post, “The innovative use of infrared high-transmittance film material greatly improves the transmittance of infrared light passing through the display.”
Initially, the company is embedding the fingerprint sensor in the power button of the device, as we have seen recently with the POCO X2. We think this could be a game-changer for Redmi’s budget series as they can now provide in-display biometric scanning even with an IPS LCD display!
