As we know, the Indian government banned Tiktok along with other 58 Chinese apps a few days back. However, the TikTok ban has lead to openings for other apps that are currently looking for an audience to grow. Facebook has noticed this opportunity and is planning to take advantage of it. According to a report by BusinessInsider, the company is testing Instagram’s Reel feature in India.
For those who don’t know about the Reel feature, it is a simple video editing tool that allows users to create 15-second videos just like TikTok. You can then post these videos to your Instagram stories, someone’s DM, or post it to a section of Explore tab known as Top Reels.
According to BusinessInsider, a Facebook spokesperson told them, “We’re planning to start testing an updated version of Reels in more countries,” He further said, “Reels is a fun, creative way for people to express themselves and get entertained. We’re excited to bring this new version to more of our global community. No further plans to share on launch date or countries for now.”
The CEO of the company Mark Zuckerberg said last year that TikTok is similar to Instagram’s Explore tab. So, this could be the reason they started Reels, to compete with the Chinese app. Not only that but, the company has recently announced the shutdown of its standalone app Lasso, which was similar to the Chinese app TikTok. Maybe this was done to generate hype and crowd for the new app Reels.
The report also says that some Instagram users in India have already begun receiving this new feature in their app. So far, the rollout of this feature has been a bit slow, but soon you will see this feature on your smartphone. Till then, stay tuned for more updates.
