Previously, Instagram introduced a feature that flags the offensive comments. Now, it is expanding this feature to Instagram captions. The social media platform has announced recently that the feature will warn people if their caption for feed post is offensive and will receive a prompt “This caption looks similar to others that have been reported.” It uses AI to detect language similar to posts which have been reported earlier.
Here is what Instagram noted:
As part of our long-term commitment to lead the fight against online bullying, we’ve developed and tested AI that can recognize different forms of bullying on Instagram. Earlier this year, we launched a feature that notifies people when their comments may be considered offensive before they’re posted. Results have been promising, and we’ve found that these types of nudges can encourage people to reconsider their words when given a chance
However, it does not block users from publishing their remarks. The social platform mentioned that this feature is to give users time to reconsider their words before posting. The notification prompt also has three options “Edit Caption,” “Learn More,” and “Share Anyway.”
Instagram also mentioned that implementing the feature for comments earlier showed some positive results, and this could reduce not only bullying but also will educate the users what’s allowed on the platform. As a whole, it is to combat negativity on its platform. For now, the feature is available to only selected countries and soon will be available widely.
