Today, Google has taken down the Paytm app from the Play Store in India for violating its policies. Paytm is India’s most valued startup with over 50 million active monthly users, it is basically a fintech app that has tried to combine e-commerce, gaming, ticketing, etc. into a mega app of its kind.
Suzanne Frey, Vice President, Product, Android Security, and Privacy said in an official blog,
We have these policies to protect users from potential harm. When an app violates these policies, we notify the developer of the violation and remove the app from Google Play until the developer brings the app into compliance. And in the case where there are repeated policy violations, we may take more serious action which may include terminating Google Play Developer accounts. Our policies are applied and enforced on all developers consistently.
In India, sports betting or gambling is illegal, but fantasy sports is allowed, which involves users to select players and win cash or rewards based on players score in the real matches. Now the controversy over here is that Paytm has been marketing a fantasy sports service- Paytm First Games from the last few days.
On the other side, Paytm has assured its users via official tweet that all the user’s money is completely safe, and the service will be as usual for the users who already have the app installed on their Android devices.
We believe Google and Paytm will soon figure a way out, and the app will soon be back in the Store.
