folding iphone and folding ipad

Earlier Apple revealed patents covering its plans for designing folding iPhone. UBS claims in a new investor note that Apple is steadily working on the folding device technology. Moreover, it predicted that the folding iPad would probably launch before the iPhone.

UBS likewise thinks that folding Apple product would launch in 2020, more likely believes in 2021.

The report published on CNBC:

UBS said Samsung “dominates” intellectual property filings for folding display and device technologies, and the bank expects, “Samsung will lead the way for foldable adoption as a smartphones vendor.”

But Apple is steadily working on the technology and UBS believes a folding Apple product could come next year, although it said “2021 is more likely.” UBS thinks the first folding Apple product is more likely to be an iPad than an iPhone.

UBS stated that there would be a hurdle in the consumer’s minds regarding the price. According to the report, UBS stated that:

Price remains the key hurdle in most consumers’ minds, while the adequate average premium vs regular smartphones surveyed to be [about] US$400-500. The survey indicates greater willingness to pay a premium (c. $600) and generally higher interest among Apple buyers for foldable products.

UBS recommends that the companies have to work on their prices for foldable smartphone devices to take off as a product category.

The bank’s study also recognized that China is the most responsive for folding smartphones similar to how it drove larger display phones adoption.

We are hoping that Apple will be more careful than Samsung regarding the foldable displays. Samsung has had an embarrassing experience over Galaxy Fold. Major display issues found when reviewers tested it. Recently the Korean Company stated that Galaxy Fold would be launched in September.
