Android 11 Developer Preview 2 is out with the support for foldable phones

Android 11 Developer Preview 2

Google releases Android 11 Developer Preview 2 exactly after a month since Preview 1 came out. As the first Preview, it is also intended for Developers, not for public beta, and it doesn’t come with all the features which we expect in Android 11. However, it comes with some new improvements and changes.

The Developer Preview 2 features a 5G State API, which will let the developers check whether a user is on a 5G NR (New Radio) or NSA (Non-Standalone) network so that the apps can take advantage of extra bandwidth which comes with 5G. There is also a new API for the Hinge angle for foldable devices. This API comes with support for hinge angle sensor, which lets the app check the hinge angle directly or via the AndroidX library.

Google also added an API for Call Screening, where apps can report the reason for call rejection, informing the user why it is being rejected and lets the user perform actions such as mark the call as spam or add the number to the contact list.

Moreover, support for handling variable refresh rates at the system level has been included so that developers don’t have to roll out their own solutions for different refresh rates. Additionally, there is support for the camera in the Android emulator, and after reboot, apps will be to resume their functionality. Synchronized IME transitions have also been added, allowing the developers to synchronize the app’s content with the IME so that to get smoother animations while running onscreen keyboard.

Google has also made a couple of improvements in their privacy and security in Android 11, which you check here. For the developers to install the Preview build easily, Google has provided an option through the Flash Tool. Here is what it mentioned about it:

To make flashing a bit easier, you can optionally get today’s release from the Android Flash Tool. For those already running Developer Preview 1 or 1.1, we’re also offering an over-the-air (OTA) update to today’s release.

The Android 11 Developer Preview 2 is only available on Pixel phones, which includes Pixel 4 / 4 XL, Pixel 3a / 3a XL, Pixel 3 / 3 XL, or Pixel 2 / 2 XL phones.
