One of the world’s leading eCommerce platform, Alibaba is planning to enter the product market. Surprisingly, the Chinese giant has developed a new desig for a foldable smartphone, and filed for its patent.
Alibaba submitted a patent in China in March 2019. The patent was authorized on January 21, 2020, and consisted of in the WIPO’s Global Design Database (World Intellectual Property Organization).
According to LetsGoDigital, the foldable smartphone from Alibaba has a clamshell design, and unlike the clamshell foldable smartphones that we have actually seen up until now from the Samsung and Motorola, this one from Alibaba can be folded twice lengthwise with two fold lines.
The Alibaba foldable smartphone has a screen on the back, which covers 1/3 of the overall area, and it concerns the upper part. Unlike the front screen, the back is not supplied with a versatile screen, however, with a regular screen. If you fold the device fully, this screen part will stay functional, as a sort of front display screen.
Apart from these, there are two physical buttons on the right edge of the device, which may be for the power on/off and the volume rocker.
We are unable to provide any information about the cameras as we can’t see any camera layout in these designs.
The advancement of Alibaba patenting a foldable smartphone design is rather intriguing, considered that the eCommerce giant does not make items of its own. Even if the phone is to make its launch commercially in the market, the business might be resold or accredit the patent to another Chinese smartphone manufacturer.
