Samsung innovates a 108-megapixel camera sensing unit in cooperation with Xiaomi

After releasing a new 64-megapixel camera sensing unit previously in May this year, Samsung today revealed the world’s first 108-megapixel camera sensor in cooperation with Xiaomi. Both the business had already teamed up for a new 64-megapixel smart device that will utilize Samsung’s 64-megapixel ISOCELL GW1 sensing unit.

Today, Samsung posted regarding this with more detailed information.

Yongin Park, executive vice president of sensing unit organization at Samsung Electronics, said,

“Samsung is continuously pushing for innovations in pixel and logic technologies to engineer our ISOCELL image sensors to capture the world as close to how our eyes perceive them,”

“Through close collaboration with Xiaomi, ISOCELL Bright HMX is the first mobile image sensor to pack over 100 million pixels and delivers unparalleled color reproduction and stunning detail with advanced Tetracell and ISOCELL Plus technology.”

Co-founder and president of Xiaomi, Lin Bin said,

“For ISOCELL Bright HMX, Xiaomi and Samsung have worked closely together from the early conceptual stage to production that has resulted in a groundbreaking 108Mp image sensor. We are very pleased that picture resolutions previously available only in a few top-tier DSLR cameras can now be designed into smartphones,”

“As we continue our partnership, we anticipate bringing not only new mobile camera experiences but also a platform through which our users can create unique content.”

About 108-megapixel camera sensor

The new 108-megapixel camera sensor , the ISOCELL Bright HMX, will enable customers to take photos in high-end DSLR quality. The sensing unit is 1/1.33- inch size and has a big area, implying it can take in more light in “low-lit settings than smaller sized sensing units.”

It utilizes Samsung’s customized Tetracell innovation that uses 4 pixels as one to take in more light in dark environments. It likewise assists in reducing sound and increases color precision, hence resulting in brighter and vibrant photos. For sophisticated recording, the HMX supports video recording without losses in field-of-view at resolutions approximately 6K (6016 x 3384) 30-frames-per-second (fps).

Smartphone Companies are now focussing more on megapixels, which results in better images. We can see 48 megapixels sensing unit is already being used in many smartphones. Phones equipped with 64 megapixels are the next to the market. Companies like Xiaomi and Realme will launch soon their new phones equipped with a 64-megapixel camera sensing unit. But seeing the capabilities of Qualcomm’s (mobile chipmaker giant) 6th, 7th and 8th series of the processor which already supports up to 192 megapixels, so Samsung with collaboration with Xiaomi innovates beyond 100 megapixels, ISOCELL Bright HMX the 108-megapixel camera sensor.

According to rumors Mi Mix 4 will be the first phone to use the 108-megapixel camera sensor. But it is still a rumor, so we have to wait for the next official information.
